The night was headlined by CM Punk putting the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against former titleholder Sami Zayn, in their first singles meeting since Punk took the title from Zayn in July. Zayn earned the bout after weeks of interfering in Punk's championship matches.
Randy Orton opened the show fresh off his controversial win over Cody Rhodes at Sunday Night's Main Event, calling his shot at whoever walked out of Mexico City as champion. In confirmed title action, Rey Fenix retained the AAA Cruiserweight Championship against Ricky Saints. The card also featured The War Raiders defending the AAA World Tag Team Championship against Damian Priest and R-Truth, plus Nia Jax challenging interim Women's Champion Chelsea Green.
Elsewhere, Nikki Bella defeated Paige in a grudge match, and new United States Champion Trick Williams was ambushed by Baron Corbin during an in-ring celebration. WWE also aired a tribute marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
