Wrestler Profile
Katsuyori Shibata
Katsuyori Shibata is the wrestler — the purist's purist, whose stiff kicks, dead-eyed stare and refusal to embellish made him the spiritual conscience of New Japan. After leaving for MMA in the 2000s, his prodigal return delivered the hardest-hitting matches of the decade, including wars with Tomohiro Ishii and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
His 2017 IWGP title challenge against Kazuchika Okada — a masterpiece that ended with a subdural hematoma from his own headbutt — nearly killed him and forced retirement. Wrestling mourned. Then, impossibly, Shibata returned: first with a surprise exhibition, then full matches in AEW and New Japan, kicking as hard as ever.
As head coach of the LA Dojo, he has shaped the next generation while continuing his own comeback. WrestleRanks voters rank Shibata with something close to awe — the man who came back from the void, still asking for one more fight.
